Titanic America
Previous | Next by rich 25 February, 2004 - 11:45 AM

This is a good article highlighting the problems with fiscal irresponsibility in Washington. A stat that, while unsupprising, still shocked me:

In 1940, there were 4 million Americans working for the government and 11 million working in manufacturing. Today, there are 7 million more Americans working for the government (21.5 million) than in all manufacturing industries (14.5 million).

is this actual government employees or contractors as well? and does this include state and local government or just federal? i believe i heard that numbers this high usually include all outside contractors (like the enormous CSC?)

I also wonder how many working age Americans are in the country today than in 1940, in absolute numbers.
